Q-Art Presents II (work in progress) and Happy Birthday Q-Art London! 18th-28th November, APT Gallery, Deptford

dsc0042copy

Our second Q-Art exhibition Q-Art London Presents II (work in progress) took place between the 18th-28th November at the APT Gallery, Deptford. The show brought together the work of 36 artists from across London, who had presented work in a Q-Art convenor within the previous 09/10 Q-Art/ academic year.

See pictures, comment on the show and continue your discussions here!

Reflecting the nature of the crits, the exhibiting artists were given the option to display either finished or ‘in-progress’ work for the show. The exhibition and its events (which included a convenor with artists in the show, an Artquest: Self-Assembly and a Q-Art London and jotta Gallery tour) attracted 500 visitors. Pictures and details of the events can be seen below!

  1. I have realised it is much harder to write down what I wanted to say but I will try....I wanted to comment on a few works, but I will start with yours Jess....For me the ads embody a time when modernist, masculine values of progress and invention were pitched against routine and repetition, and the drudgery of domestic life. In your work the drawings desperately try to disrupt, or at least question, these values. It was mentioned during the conversation on Sunday, that the work was still too ordered, in the way it was presented etc. For me this ‘failure’ was the poignant tension of the work – your attempt to disrupt these images of power drew a parallel with a struggle which is still very real. I disagree that your concession to some kind of order embedded in your creativity actually constituted a failure – and that to be successful your work must categorically explode or debunk ... for me, the attempt, and apparent failure, to disrupt these images by way of quiet, systematic intervention says much more about the endurance of these images of power, and of artistic value judgements/hierarchies....
