My work pertains to the figure/individual, as it relates to the surrounding environments and material culture which support and sustain it. I am interested in the delicate, the quiet and the susceptiblenature of this person/individual/figure, and further in its relationship with the vivid, robust and long-lasting materials, objects and environments which surround it.
I am exploring a notion of the 'person' as a variable - an impressionable dependent upon that which surrounds it. In this notion, we, humans, are delicate and susceptible, we are but whispers upon that which withstands and outlives us. We are overpowered by the vivid solidity and comparative sense of permanence in the structural objects, materials and culture around us. Our changeability and sensitivity to our surroundings puts us in a vulnerable, delicate position. Currently, I am exploring this delicate/powerful relationship through paintings of unstaged photographed figures interacting with their everyday surroundings. These figures are explored as transparent, blank beings amongst vibrant, vivid material surroundings.
