MA Film Theory
My work remains concerned with excavating issues brought up by late Modernism and Minimalism, specifically to do with the inherent agency involved with materials and the extent to which material objects extend into the non-physical realm - structural bodies with social or even mythological ramifications. More recently, my work has sought to deal with whether an encounter with materials might come to operate like an act of remembrance, and if so, whether such material structures could come to resemble a “model for a psychological state glimpsed within their strange geometry.” - J. G. Ballard. Through my work, I try to offer structures which appear to be struggling to remember themselves back into the moment, as though they were part of the apparatus of a séance.
The piece I'll show is called The Owl's Forecast. It is two wooden structures wrapped in wool which stand on a small bench. The provided image is of the work. Dimensions 1.5 meters high a 1 meter wide with one wall mounted component and a cassette player placed near to the work.
