Q-Art London was set up by Sarah Rowles, then in her second year of her art practice BA at Goldsmiths (she is now in the third), in November 2008. Q-Art is a forum for students and graduates from across London's major art Universities as well as anyone else with an interest in art. Q-Art London’s purpose is to provide an additional and alternative learning environment to the institution; to break down the barriers between various art schools, their departments and levels of study, also allowing a crossing of perspectives; and to provide a place where graduates of these colleges can continue to present and critically discuss work in a familiar, supportive and critical environment. Q-Art also provides a place for those who have never been to art school, to get involved in a similar discussion to what goes on in art schools.
So far universities whose students/ staff and alumni support us include: Byam Shaw, Camberwell College of Art, Central Saint Martins, Chelsea College of Art, City and Guilds School of Art, Courtauld Institute, Goldsmiths, Kingston University, London College of Communication, London Met, Middlesex University, Royal College of Art, Royal Academy Schools, Slade School of Fine Art, University College London, University of the Creative Arts, University of East London, University of Westminster and Wimbledon College of Art. Once a month, throughout the course of the academic year, we hold convenors in one of the universities. In July 2009 at the APT Gallery, Deptford there was an exhibition for the 41 artists who presented work throughout the year. We also hold gallery visits and put on high profile panel discussions, our last, in October 2009 was 'Who Decides the Value of Contemporary Art?' was supported by LCACE and chaired by Julian Stallabras.
'12 Gallerists: 20 Questions' is our first publication and helps raise money for the running of Q-Art, which is currently run on volunteer time. This is currently sold in Tate Modern, ICA and Artwords bookshop - you can also buy it at Q-Art event and on this website.
You can view our ‘Events Calendar’ for the dates of this years events and our ‘Convenor’ page to learn more about what a convenor is, view work and comments from this and the previous year and sign up to present in/attend a convenor this year.
