Q-Art London was set up by Sarah Rowles, then in her second year of her art practice BA at Goldsmiths (Graduated 2010), in November 2008. Q-Art is a forum for students, graduates and self-trained artists from across London. Q-Art London’s purpose is to provide an additional and alternative learning environment to the institution; to break down the barriers between various art schools, their departments and levels of study allowing a crossing of perspectives; and to provide a place where graduates can continue to present and critically discuss work in a familiar and supportive environment. Q-Art is free and opens up the systems of HE art education and art evaluation for anyone to take part in.
Q-Art runs regular crits in different London art colleges and artist studios; gallery tours; panel discussions and an end of year show 'Q Art presents'. A self-educating forum, Q-Art also publishes books that aim to demystify particular aspects of the art world. The first publication ‘12 Gallerists: 20 Questions’, a collection of interviews with 12 London gallerists is soon to be followed by a book of interviews with 12 heads of London BA Fine Art Courses, discussing the history, pedagogy and current state of HE level art education. The books are sold across London and the UK in shops including: ICA; Tate Modern; Whitechapel Gallery; Serpentine Gallery, Lmnop Shop; Artwords Books....
